Peripheral blood cytokine levels in paediatric-onset inflammatory bowel disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Article in JPGN reports, 2026. The graph could read no effect estimate from its abstract, so it casts no vote on the map. Cited by 1 paper.
What it found
Each row is one number read from the abstract, on the scale the paper reported it, with its interval. Left of the dashed line favours the treatment, right favours the comparator. Under each row is the sentence it came from. New to these charts? A ten-minute tutorial.
The abstract states no effect estimate the extractor could read, or names no intervention and outcome on the map, so this paper lights no cell and moves no belief. It is still indexed, cited and linked below.
The trial behind it
Trials whose registry record cites this paper, or whose number appears in the abstract. A trial that started after this paper was published is citing it as background, not reporting it.
Neither the registry nor the abstract names a trial number. If this is a trial report, that itself is worth knowing.

Abstract
Objectives: We aimed to summarise findings on blood cytokine levels in patients with paediatric-onset inflammatory bowel disease (PIBD) compared to healthy controls. Methods: This systematic review followed the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines and was registered at Prospero (CRD42024579684). A literature search was performed on 1 August 2024 in PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science and Scopus. We included studies that reported levels of cytokines in plasma or serum. Pooled effect sizes of mean values were calculated using Hedges' Results: The search revealed 5529 papers. Twenty-three articles reporting on 58 cytokines were included, totalling 1018 patients with PIBD and 634 healthy controls. Meta-analysis was feasible for three cytokines: interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 and tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α. IL-6 levels were elevated in PIBD ( Conclusions: IL-6 was increased in the peripheral blood of patients with PIBD. Further proteomic studies, including correlation analyses of clinical data, are encouraged.
