1 · What the graph read from it

What it found

Each row is one number read from the abstract, on the scale the paper reported it, with its interval. Left of the dashed line favours the treatment, right favours the comparator. Under each row is the sentence it came from. New to these charts? A ten-minute tutorial.

The abstract states no effect estimate the extractor could read, or names no intervention and outcome on the map, so this paper lights no cell and moves no belief. It is still indexed, cited and linked below.

2 · The registry

The trial behind it

Trials whose registry record cites this paper, or whose number appears in the abstract. A trial that started after this paper was published is citing it as background, not reporting it.

Neither the registry nor the abstract names a trial number. If this is a trial report, that itself is worth knowing.

Abstract

Objective: To systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of Methods: Eight Chinese and English databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing PVL preparations combined with ATDs and ATDs for hyperthyroidism treatment. The Cochrane risk-of-bias assessment tool was used to evaluate the quality of included studies. Statistical analyses were performed using the Revman 5.3 software. Stata software (version 16.0) was used to detect publication bias. The GRADE system was used to assess the level of evidence. Results: Seventeen studies were analyzed. The total sample size was 1,366 patients. Meta-analysis revealed that treatment with PVL preparations in combination with ATDs effectively reduced free triiodothyronine [standardized mean difference (SMD) = -0.98, 95%CI (-1.39, -0.57), Conclusion: Treatment of hyperthyroidism with PVL preparations in combination with ATDs was superior to treatment with ATDs alone in terms of improvements in thyroid function, thyroid antibodies, thyroid gland size, inflammation, and incidence of adverse events. However, owing to the low strength of evidence from the included studies, this conclusion requires further validation in more high-quality RCTs.
